The Waterboy Scandal

Northwestern players allowed to unionize

In March, the National Labor Relations Board ruled in favor of the Northwestern players wishing to unionize. These student-athletes believe that they are employees of the University. This ruling also allows student-athletes to hire representation in collective bargaining, which leads to the payment of players. Northwestern and the NCAA are both very disappointed with the ruling. The NCAA believes that student-athletes are just that; student-athletes, not employees. The NCAA stated that the main purpose for college athletes is to become educated, not to play a sport.
Kain Colter makes his case for the unionizing of
                                                         Northwestern student-athletes

The ruling to allow players to unionize and be paid for performing in a college sport is absurd. The purpose of attending a university is to learn, if you are talented enough to play a sport then it is just a bonus. To be able to be a part of college athletics is a privilege, not a job. Paying a student for being part of an extra-curricular activity is wrong. If you begin to pay college athletes it could lead to all sorts of problems. If athletes can be paid by universities for their athletic abilities, then the university selection process drastically changes. Instead of student-athletes choosing a school for its academic prestige, proximity to home/location, atmosphere of the town, and the campus life athletes will simply choose the school that offers them the most money. Paying athletes could lead to all kinds of financial troubles for many schools. Because of funding shortages many sports may be cut because there just simply isn’t enough money to pay all of the athletes. Also, if these football players begin to be paid for the time and effort they put in daily, then any student in college could make the argument that they should be paid as well. Non student-athletes still put in tremendous amounts of time and effort into their studies, as do band members, and the students involved in drama, and so on. Obviously, the unionizing and payment of college athletes causes more problems than it solves.

My studies have shown that had this ruling been made years ago,
the highest paid student-athlete ever would have been Bobby Boucher

Too Ambitious Al Capone

Al Capone
Al Capone was born in 1899 to an Italian immigrant family. He quit school after the sixth grade and promptly was accepted into a street gang. At that time the street gang was led by Johnny Torrio. Around the year 1920 Torrio summoned Al to join him in Chicago as Torrio had become a high ranking mobster in the Colosimo mob. Capone killed Colosimo at Torrio's request and Torrio rose to the head of the mob. As Torrio's health waned away. Capone was given authority over the mob. He built an empire of crime in Chicago, running everything from bootlegging to prostitution. The most notorious crime to be committed under Capone's leader ship was the Valentine's day massacre. Capone's mobsters approached a garage full of rival gang members and they entered the garage dressed as cops and proceeded to gun down every rival gang member in the garage. Eventually Capone was sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of tax evasion. He became very unhealthy during his stay in prison. After his release from prison Capone's mental and physical state were very poor. He was suffering from a late stage of syphilis and he eventually died from a combination of this and pneumonia.

In my opinion negative ambition is very closely related to selfish ambition. Think about all the people throughout history who have displayed positive ambition. How many of those people were ambitious only to benefit themselves? Not very many. Now think about some people who have displayed negative ambition. How many of them were ambitious only for personal gain? A lot of people, am I right or am I right? Capone simply wanted to gain money and power, and he did exactly that. He murdered many people to rise to the top and he gained an estimated $100,000,000 + through illegal activities. I'd say he showed plenty negative ambition. He had no boundaries or limits. He obviously had a severely lacking set of morals, and he was doing what he did to benefit himself. That sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. So, if you are a very ambitious person be sure to check the reasons for what you do, that way you don't end up as the most infamous mobster of all time.

The current leader of the mob is a direct descendant from Capone, Mrs. Hake.

Somewhere Over the DANEbow

My birth certificate says Dane Hansen, but more often than not I go by Danebow (@tastetheDANEbow on twitter) or Dansen. I attend Creighton Preparatory school with about one thousand other males. There are no females #thestruggle. It’s not too bad though. I study a lot and work to maintain that 4.0. I used to go to Lewis Central Middle School in Council Bluffs. Yes, I am from Iowa. No, I don’t own a farm. Try me with an Iowa joke if you want, I’ve heard them all before. I still don’t understand how Nebraskans can say that the only people that live in Iowa are farmers when Nebraska is just as rural as Iowa, but whatever. Listening to music that my parents don’t like is one of my favorite things to do. I always look forward to the drive to and from school because it is my jam out time. My favorite artists are G-Eazy, Hoodie Allen, Childish Gambino, Chiddy Bang, Mac miller, and Sammy Adams. It is extremely hard to restrain from downloading their songs illegally, but I do my best. I probably spend too much time on twitter and listening to music, but YOLO right (that YOLO thing is a joke).  The rest of my life is spent playing baseball. My passion for baseball seems to amuse my friends. I have been playing select baseball every summer since I was 7. I played for the Spikes for a few years then moved on to the River City Owls. During my first high school season I played on Coach Wellwood’s JV team. Baseball is always the best part of my summer. I love to watch college sports and the MLB. Rock chalk Jayhawk basketball. I cheer for the ‘skers during football season, even though football is a little barbaric for my taste. The Arizona Diamondbacks are my MLB team. I lived in Phoenix the year they won the World Series and I can’t seem to stop cheering for them. I am the most interesting man in the blogging world, and if you disagree I will fight you.
